A successful recovery from oral surgery, such as wisdom teeth extraction, dental implants, or orthognathic surgery, is possible if your post-op surgery advice is followed carefully. Our staff at Berks Oral Surgery in Reading, PA, has a list of guidelines we offer to our patients for a positive oral surgery recovery outcome.
Expectations Following Your Surgery
The first 24 hours after your oral surgery can include the following:
- Expect minor bleeding or oozing from the area where the surgery was performed.
- You will be given gauze pads that will need to be changed as directed.
- Avoid using straws for the first few days to prevent dislodging the clot or causing dry socket.
Bruising and Swelling
You can experience bruising and swelling around the jawline or cheeks, depending on what type of procedure you’ve had. Typically, swelling and bruising should begin to subside within two to three days and can be relieved by applying an ice pack regularly for the first day after surgery.
Soreness and Pain
Soreness can be expected for several days following your surgery, and your oral surgeon may prescribe pain relievers to get you through the first few days post-surgery. Over-the-counter pain relievers may be recommended after you’ve finished your prescription to keep pain levels manageable. Medications should be taken within the prescribed time frame, typically every 4 to 6 hours. Make sure you take your medication as prescribed.
Dietary Changes
A soft diet consisting of mashed potatoes, yogurt, applesauce, or broth is ideal for a few days after surgery. You should stay away from crunchy or chewy foods. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids (but no straws!).
Practice Good Oral Hygiene
It’s really important to keep your mouth clean post-surgery to prevent infection. You should keep up with your brushing routine, but avoid brushing in or around the surgical site. You should also refrain from using mouthwash for a few days and instead use a rinse of warm salt water.
Take Time to Rest
Take time to rest following your surgery, for at least 24-48 hours. If your job requires heavy lifting or intense activity, taking a few days off to recover is highly recommended. Getting back into heavy activities too soon can result in bleeding and might slow your healing down. Return to normal activities slowly, and listen to your body.
