Our wisdom teeth can become impacted when they erupt and there is not enough room for them. Which is why we urge patients to have them removed before the eruption occurs! With a safe and gentle tooth extraction, we can do this for our teen and adult patients. Our oral surgery and dental implant clinics in Berks County, PA, can conduct wisdom tooth extraction!
The Risks Associated With Wisdom Teeth
Also known as our third molars, these additional teeth tend to erupt in the rear of our mouths in our late teens and early 20s. For some, only one or two could arrive, while others may see all four erupting. Since there is no room for them, their arrival can have major consequences for your smile. For example, they could only partially erupt, causing a painful impaction. You could also have misalignment develop, which then increases the risk of cavities and gum disease, in addition to the negative changes to your smile’s appearance. The risk of infection is much higher too. To avoid these complications, we want to remove your wisdom teeth, preferably before they even arrive.
Planning Your Extraction
To get started, our team will take detailed digital x-rays of your smile, which use 90% less radiation and will provide the images instantly chairside. We can see the position of the wisdom teeth and assess their risk to your smile. We can also plan extraction to ensure we avoid blood vessels, nerve tissues, and sinus cavities. To ensure the procedure is comfortable for you, we can offer a local anesthetic to the area being treated. In addition, we have sedation to help you enter a calm and relaxed state with little to no memory of the procedure at all. We want you to enjoy a positive experience in our office!
Taking Out Your Third Molars
We want to protect you from the risk of impaction, soft tissue and tooth damage, and sensitivity and aches. When you are properly relaxed and comfortable, our team will open the gums above the teeth so we can access and then remove them carefully with a pair of forceps. We then suture the area closed, and will remove sutures in a follow-up visit. You need to rest for the next 24 to 48 hours, and follow our instructions and take any prescribed medications to ensure a complication-free healing period. If you have any questions, contact our team today.
